While I was looking up on El Lissitzky I came across this site - an exhibition by MoMA in 2002 - I like the bright warm red on a soft cool blue.

Piet Zwart

How do I know about Piet Zwart? It started with Huffer - the logo to be specific, it reminds me of some old iconographic I saw in a design history book. Flicking through the pages and I saw it - the Huffer logo is exactly the icon that Piet Zwart created in 1924 for the NKF catalogue.

Paul Rand

Paul Rand (1914–1996) was an American graphic designer, best known for his corporate logo designs.

Among these young Americans it seems to be that Paul Rand is one of the best and most capable [. . .] He is a painter, lecturer, industrial designer, [and] advertising artist who draws his knowledge and creativeness from the resources of this country. He is an idealist and a realist, using the language of the poet and business man. He thinks in terms of need and function. He is able to analyze his problems but his fantasy is boundless. [1]

Myoung Ho Lee

Myoung Ho Lee, born in 1975, is a Korean photographer based in Seoul, Korea. The Tree series has prompted references to diverse traditions in the history of photography, including landscape photography, anthropological field studies, studio portraiture, fashion, staged photography, cinematic projections, surrealism, and billboard advertising. Sze Tsung Leong

Sze Tsung Leong is an American-Chinese photographer, born in Mexico. Now 38 and he travels extensively photographing landscapes and cityscapes around the world. He is a qualified architect but turned to photography and had made it a career. It is apparent his photography references his architecture background. I really like the History series of cities in China.

Zhang Huan 張洹

Zhang Huan (張洹) is an internationally recognised Chinese contemporary artist. Born in 1965 in He Nan Province, China. Before you read anything more about him, you should visit this gallery of behind-the-scene photos which will give you a glimpse of the type of work he does.

Vann Molyvann

This is the National Theatre, also commonly known as the Bassac Theatre because it was located near the bank of the Bassac River in Phnom Penh. It was built in 1968 by Vann Molyvann, but was demolished in 2008. These pictures are taken from the Vann Molyvann Project.

Nigel Holmes

I remember going to Auckland Public Library in the evening after work to shuffle through pages of design books, whilst I hog the graphic design section and blocking people from walking through the aisle I came across a tiny tiny handbook done by Nigel Holmes. It is an instructional book without words, it is pictorial yet I could make sense of each instruction quite easily, this is why I think the design is successful because it serves its purpose, to direct, to instruct.

Lance Wyman

The first time I heard about Lance Wyman was from the Forward section of Pictogram & Icon Graphics 2. He wrote a short explanation of what pictogram is, from that I googled his name and found his website.

Wieden+Kennedy

I have seen the work produced by Wieden+Kennedy here and there in design books and magazine in the last couple years but never really had a deeper interest in them until I have read some of their comments in 100 Habits of Successful Graphic Designers where I began to appreciate their work more. Wieden+Kennedy is an international design agency with studios in New York, Portland, London, Tokyo, Delhi, Amsterdam and Shanghai.

Stefan Sagmeister

Stefan Sagmeister was here in Auckland last year for Semi-Permanent and I was very surprised when my friend brought to my attention that he was sitting among the audience, and was just a few seats away from where we were sitting. His studio is based in New York.

Michael C. Place

Michael came to Auckland in 2006 as a speaker at Semi-Permanent which I happened to attend for the first time. Though I have seen works done by his design studio Build prior to the conference.
