Absolute & Relative Measurements
The two measurement systems used in typography:
Absolute measurements
a fixed value like mm, cm, m
Relative measurements
character spacing for example are directly linked to typesize which means that they are defined by a series of relative measurements, the em, is a relative measurement. Type set at 70pt has a 70pt em.
